Retainers

Smile Health Orthodontics offers the best smile solutions in Beverly Hills and beyond – but the work doesn’t stop when we unveil your beautiful new smile. In fact, the most important part of your treatment is just beginning: the retention phase.

Retainers

Why are retainers important?

After we remove your orthodontic appliance, we will fit you with a custom retainer. This retainer will help you keep the stunning results you’ve worked so hard for. Without a retainer, your teeth will want to shift back toward their original positions!

Dr. Solomon will most likely ask you to wear your retainer full-time at first. Once your smile has had some time to settle, she will let you know when you can switch to night-time only wear. It’s very important to follow her instructions if you want to keep your teeth in alignment.

Types of retainers

We offer a variety of custom retainers at our practice to suit your lifestyle and goals. Here are the types of retainers you can choose from:

Clear removable retainers

Clear removable retainers look a bit like clear aligners, but they are made from a slightly stiffer material to keep your teeth firmly in their proper positions. Just like aligners, you can remove your clear retainers for meals and brushing and flossing.

Hawley retainers

Hawley retainers are the traditional removable retainer. They consist of an acrylic plate and stainless steel wires that wrap around the front of your teeth. We can even customize the color of your Hawley retainer to suit your personality!

Fixed retainers

Fixed retainers are thin metal wires that we install on the backside of your teeth. They permanently hold your teeth in position, so they are the most fool-proof retainer method.

Because fixed retainers give food extra places to hide, it’s important to pay extra attention to cleaning around your retainer when you brush your teeth.

How to care for removable retainers

How to care for removable retainers

Hawley and clear removable retainers are ultra-convenient, but they do take a little extra care. To keep your retainers clean, you should take them out and brush them gently with cold water and liquid hand soap. You can also use a special retainer cleaning solution.

Removable retainers can be easy to lose track of, so make sure you store your retainers in their case when you take them out. You should also keep your retainers away from pets and high temperatures to avoid damage to your appliance.
