What is surgical orthodontics?

Surgical orthodontics is corrective jaw surgery performed to fix skeletal issues that affect your ability to bite, chew, or speak properly. It can also be used to create a more harmonious and symmetrical facial profile.

How do I know if I need jaw surgery?

Most patients do not require jaw surgery, and we will only suggest it if it’s absolutely necessary for your health or smile goals. Dr. Solomon will determine if jaw surgery could benefit you when she assesses your smile, teeth, and jaw positions at your free consultation.

Some adult patients need jaw surgery since their jaw stops growing in adulthood. If there are jaw issues in children and teens, we can often use functional appliances to guide the proper growth of their jawline. For adults, these adjustments could only be achieved through surgery.

If it is determined that you would benefit from surgical orthodontics, Dr. Solomon will work in conjunction with an oral and maxillofacial surgeon to position your jaws and teeth for optimal function.

You will start orthodontic treatment before your jaw surgery. While it might seem like your tooth alignment is getting worse instead of better, Dr. Solomon will artfully shape your smile so that it will be beautifully aligned after you undergo surgery.
