TMJ/TMD treatment in Los Angeles

What is TMJ/TMD?

TMJ stands for “Temporomandibular Joint,” the joint that links our upper and lower jaws together and allows them to hinge open and closed. Many people use the term “TMJ” colloquially to discuss pain or issues with the joint, but the real term is “TMD” – Temporomandibular Joint Disorder.

If you have TMD, or chronic TMJ discomfort, it can make chewing uncomfortable and cause radiating headaches. Of course, the symptoms and severity of TMD can vary from person to person, so diagnosing and treating it is best left to professionals.

What causes TMD?

Unfortunately, no exact cause of TMD has been determined. Jaw injuries, tooth grinding, and everyday wear and tear may contribute to TMD, but many risk factors can become confused with the symptoms most people use to identify the disorder.

Symptoms of TMD

You may not experience all the symptoms of TMD, but if you notice some of the following, please visit our practice in Los Angeles:

  • Jaw pain
  • Tooth pain
  • Difficulty chewing
  • Radiating headaches
  • Pain in the neck or shoulders
  • Swelling on the side of your face
  • Jaws that “lock” in the open position
  • Jaws that “lock” in the closed position
  • Popping or grating sounds in the jaw joint when opening or closing your mouth

How do you treat TMD?

Because TMD looks different from person to person, there is no one-size-fits-all treatment. Dr. Solomon and her team are skilled in TMD treatment, but they won’t know what’s best for you until we get a better feel for your lifestyle and clinical information during an initial consultation.

Some possible treatments include:

  • Resting your TMJ
  • Short-term use of non-steroidal pain relief
  • Stress management techniques
  • Mouthguards to reduce teeth grinding
  • Posture training
  • Physical therapy
  • Diet changes
  • And surgery
